I didn't write my first "serious" original work for the stage until 1980. It was a comedy/drama anthology called Doubles, which traces the history of humankind from 5000 BC to 5000 AD. It calls for four actors to play 25 characters, as each scene was a different time and place.

I also wrote and composed my first original musical in 1980. Raisin' Cane is a sequel (of sorts) to Damn Yankees. I had just directed Van Johnson and Bobby Van in a production of the baseball musical and discussed the idea of Van Johnson reprising his Applegate role in the original show.
